ABOUT

Jewel Champbell is a multimedia artist and archivist born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Her work examines culture and identity through visual storytelling, often drawing from historical archives to weave narratives that honor heritage and explore the complexities of the human experience. With a deep appreciation for diverse identities, Jewel blends visual artistry with the preservation of history. Her work aims to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and spark conversations about the shared histories and identities that shape our world. As the founder of Blkground Press, an initiative dedicated to honoring history through tangible creations like postcards and mixed-media reinterpretations, Jewel continues to redefine how we preserve and engage with cultural narratives.

Jewel served as the 2024–2025 Archival Research Fellow for Howard University’s Black Press Archives at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center and was an Osborne Fellow at the Truro Center for the Arts in 2024. In spring 2023, she received Morgan State University's President's Second Mile Award. She is a researcher in Pulp Culture’s Community Research Circle and the founder of Blkground Press, an initiative that honors history through tangible creations such as postcards and mixed-media reinterpretations. She is also a member of Black Women Photographers.
